Background

The AIAG&VDA SPC Manual is a tool reference handbook jointly developed by AIAG (U.S. Automotive Industry Action Group) and VDA (German Association of the Automotive Industry), following the successful practice of AIAG&VDA FMEA.

This handbook covers most of the SPC use cases that typically occur. aligned with ISO and other international standards (e.g., ISO22514), aimed at helping organizations optimize processes to achieve operational excellence.

Previously, the SPC manual published by AIAG was more familiar to everyone. In fact, VDA 4 Section 3: Methods Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), Digital Mock-Up (DMU),  also defines VDA standards related to SPC. However, However, AIAG and VDA standards for SPC differ in indicator definitions, calculation methods, sampling approaches, and judgment criteria, which has caused considerable confusion and workload for companies in practical operations. This integration is not simply a merger and unification of SPC requirements, but an iteration and upgrade at the system level.

Overview and Key Points

The AIAG-VDA SPC Manual comprises three main areas (Process Management, Performance and Capability, and Control harts) across 14 chapters. It emphasizes that SPC is not merely a tool, but rather a management approach for decreasing variation, enhancing process stability, and improving product consistency. The manual also clarifies the relationships between SPC and other automotive requirements, such as special characteristics, measurement system analysis and gage capability, control plans, and audits.
